Hello and welcome to my blog, my passion for fishing, where I’ll be sharing my love for all things fishing with fellow enthusiasts and beginners alike. My name is Gary Wiggins, and I’ve been an avid fisherman for as long as I can remember. I’ve experienced various types of fishing, from the surf and deep-sea to bass and fly fishing, and I can’t wait to share my knowledge and love for the sport with you all.
A little bit about my fishing journey:
- Early Beginnings: My love for fishing started as a kid. My father gifted me my first surf reel, a Penn Squidder, back in the early 70s, and it’s still with me today. That reel sparked a lifelong passion for fishing that has only grown stronger with time.
- Versatility in Fishing: Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to try my hand at various fishing styles, including surf fishing, deep-sea fishing, bay fishing, shrimping, and gigging. I’ve also fished for bass in Texas, Arizona, and Missouri.
- Fly Fishing Adventures: My love for fly fishing began in the late 1980s when I was stationed in the Army in Bavaria, Germany cutting my teeth on native brown trout. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of fly fishing in the majestic rivers of the Pacific Northwest, where I’ve caught salmon, trout, and steelheads.
- Custom Rods: As an experienced fisherman, I’ve enjoyed making surf rods from fiberglass or Calcutta blanks, crafting them to fit my needs and preferences. This hands-on experience has given me an even deeper appreciation for the art of fishing. I sure miss those nights on that San Luis Pass Pier. Crowds of custom surf rods working the September Bull Red runs in the wake of some oncoming Texas Coast storm.
